With his 9th season victory last Saturday on the challenging Kandahar course in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Marco Odermatt (28) solidified his status among the skiing elite. By equaling Hermann Maier’s mark of 54 World Cup triumphs, he now trails only legends Ingemar Stenmark (86) and Marcel Hirscher (67).
After silencing critics who questioned his recent results in Bormio, the Lucerne native found new energy through powder skiing at home before dominating in Bavaria. "I’m very pleased with my performances," Marco told the press, proving he remains the man to beat heading into upcoming races in Kranjska Gora and Courchevel.
Chasing Historic Records
Odermatt is on track to raise his 17th crystal globe at Hafjell on March 25th. He is rapidly approaching the all-time records held by Stenmark (19 globes) and Hirscher (20). His career highlights now include:
- 54 World Cup wins (to date).
- 4 Gold medals across three different disciplines at major events.
- 5 Overall World Cup titles (likely secured very soon).
- Nearly 50 podiums in giant slalom over the last seven years.
A Leader On and Off the Slopes
Despite his fame, "Odi" remains a modest role model and a dedicated team player. He has been instrumental in building the "Swiss Armada." In 2019, only three Swiss athletes finished in the top 20; this winter, there will be at least five.
Refusing to create a private "cell," Odermatt shares his experience and confidence with younger teammates, just as veterans like Carlo Janka and Beat Feuz once did for him.
